Donald Trump, the frontrunner in the Republican race for the White House, won Mississippi and Michigan on Tuesday night, propelling him closer to victory as the presidential contenders look ahead to the big March 15 contests in Florida and Ohio. In the Democratic race, Hillary Clinton won convincingly in Mississippi on the back of strong support from African-Americans. But she suffered a surprise loss to Bernie Sanders in Michigan where polls had put her 20 points ahead. With over 90 per cent of votes counted, he was leading 50 per cent to 48. The New York tycoon won a strong victory in Mississippi, with 47 per cent of the vote after 97 per cent of the ballots had been counted. Ted Cruz, the Texas senator, had 36 per cent, while Marco Rubio — who was heading for a disastrous night — and John Kasich were far behind. Mr Trump won Michigan with a slimmer margin. He had 37 per cent of the vote with 93 per cent of ballots counted. Mr Cruz and Mr Kasich, the Ohio governor, were neck and neck at roughly 25 per cent. Mr Cruz was projected to win Idaho where only the Republicans held their primary on Tuesday. Mr Sanders’ victory in Michigan was the biggest surprise of the evening. Until Tuesday, he had performed well only in states with a predominately white electorate. Michigan’s Democratic electorate draws from a more diverse base — at least 15 per cent of the state’s electorate are African-American, a demographic that so far has voted overwhelming for Mrs Clinton. 来自:VOA英语网 文章地址: http://www.tingvoa.com/html/20170717/Donald-Trump-wins-Republican-primaries-in-Mississippi-Michig.html
